Primary Language

"Offering children the chance to build their communication skills
and giving them the opportunity to learn about and interact
respectfully with people from other countries and cultures."

Intent

We believe that learning another language offers children the chance to apply skills that will offer them fulfilment and encourage them to celebrate differences and demonstrate tolerance. At High School children are encouraged to study for their baccalaureate and building a good understanding of languages will allow our children to move on to learning a language at high school with confidence and vigour. Learning another language provides children with additional opportunities and gives children the chance to interact with a wider range of communities and build relationships with people from all cultures in a positive and celebratory way.

As we want the children to build their confidence when speaking another language we encourage children to practise languages and our lessons focus on the verbal aspects of the language. Children are able to express their thoughts and maintain conversations. Children will build up a knowledge of vocabulary in another language that they can then take forth into the wider world. They will be able to communicate confidently for practical purposes. Children will understand that learning another language has a purpose and that it will give them a range of fantastic and exciting opportunities in the future.

Implementation

The lessons are delivered weekly within KS2 and lessons are built around the Rigolo scheme of work. Lessons involve a lot of oral and aural activities and some writing and the lessons could involve the use of flashcards; listen and repeat exercises and some language games.

Impact

In lessons:

  • Pupils will be frequently assessed for pronunciation and supported with mispronunciations.
  • Responses in games or activities
  • Responses to pupils' written work

After lessons:

Subject leaders monitor the effective delivery of their fields by:

  • Conducting book looks;
  • Observing children in lessons;
  • Completing pupil perception interviews;
