Autumn One Knowledge Organiser

Merlins this half-term will be learning the following:

English: 

We start English this half term using the book The Man Who walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein. 

Genre: Non-fiction picture book  

Outcomes: Fact file, journalistic writing, setting descriptions, letter of advice, persuasive speech.

Main outcome: Biography.

After this we will be reading and writing around the book Robot Girl by Malorie Blackman.

Genre:  Science-fiction narrative.     

Outcomes: Discussion, debate, dialogue, character comparisons, review.

Main outcome: Science-fiction narrative.

Maths:

We start the Autumn unit of learning with Roman Numerals to 1000, before looking at Place Value to 1,000,000 and finally, multiples, common multiples, factors, common factors and prime numbers.

Science:

Science is all about the Human Body this half term, specifically focusing on the children learning about the different stages of human growth so that by the end of the unit of learning, the children can describe the changes as humans develop to old age.

Geography:

The unit of learning for Geography this half term is Spatial Sense.  We will be building on our prior learning about Latitude, Longitude, The Prime Meridian, Greenwich Mean Time, the Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn and looking at the information that relief maps tell us.

History:

We start Year 5 by going back in time to 900 BCE to Baghdad where we will be learning about how it became a centre of learning and attracted scholars from all over the world and from different religions to share their thoughts and ideas with others. We will learn how Baghdad was a major trading hub in the Islamic Empire and how this played a major part in its success. 

Art:

Our Art this half term links to our history as we look at Islamic architecture, its overall design, the patterns used.  As well as researching and learning about Islamic mosques, palaces and tombs, we will also be looking at and learning about the Spanish Alhambra in Granada and the Taj Mahal and then learning about how buildings such as these have influenced Begum in their designs.

RE:

We will be learning about the 5 K’s in Sikhism and what they represent to a Sikh.  We will think about the level of commitment that a Sikh with regards to their faith and this will link with our Christianity module of learning about showing commitment later in the year.

French:

In French we will be building on our prior knowledge and confidently learning the different parts of the body.  This will enable us to then create descriptive sentences bout our Monsters we design.

Life Skills:

Our Life Skills module of learning is What makes up our identify?  We will be looking at what makes us who we are and we will be thinking about the different parts to this:

  • Physical characteristics
  • Personal characteristics
  • Social Factors
Music:

We kick off with the soft rock of Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer.  It’s a lively way to start Year 5 Music!

SEAL/Behaviours 4 Learning:

We will be thinking about Building a Community and what it means to belong to a community, how we can ensure we maintain a strong community ethos and ensure that everyone is included within it.
