This half-term, Year 3 have a wide range of exciting learning planned across all subjects. We are looking forward to exploring new ideas, developing key skills, and having lots of fun along the way.
Art- ELEMENTS OF LINE
This term in Art, children will be exploring how lines can be used to show movement, texture, and expression. They will experiment with sketching, mark-making, and observational drawing, building their confidence and developing their own artistic style. Children will also look at how artists use lines creatively to communicate ideas and feelings.
Computing- CONNECTING COMPUTERS
In Computing, children will learn how computers connect and communicate, looking at networks and how information travels between devices. They will also discuss how to use technology safely and responsibly.
English- LEON AND THE PLACE BETWEEN. THE FIRST DRAWING.
In English, we will be reading two wonderful books: Leon and the Place Between and The First Drawing. Leon and the Place Between is a magical story that encourages imaginative storytelling and descriptive writing, with a focus on adding detail and writing conversations correctly. The First Drawing links to our History topic on the Stone Age and helps children practise writing in the past tense and using time words to order events. These texts help children develop reading, writing, grammar, and storytelling skills while encouraging creativity and confidence.
French – GREETINGS
In French, children will practise greeting people and introducing themselves. They will learn to say hello, goodbye, ask and answer simple questions, and give information about their name, age, and where they live. Fun activities such as songs and games help children build confidence and enjoy speaking French.
Geography- SPATIAL SENSE
In Geography, children will be developing their map skills, including using compass directions, symbols, keys, and grid references. They will also make comparisons to two places, exploring similarities and differences in landscape, climate, and community life. These lessons help children understand the wider world and how places are connected.
History- STONE AGE TO IRON AGE
Our History topic is Stone Age to Iron Age. Children will learn about hunter-gatherer life, the first farmers, and how early settlements developed. They will explore tools, homes, and traditions from thousands of years ago and consider how historians and archaeologists use evidence to learn about the past.
Maths - PLACE VALUE. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
In Maths, children will be working on Place Value and Addition & Subtraction using the White Rose approach. They will explore hundreds, tens, and ones, compare and order numbers up to 1,000, and practise adding and subtracting numbers mentally and using written methods. Lessons will focus on solving problems and explaining thinking clearly, helping children gain confidence with numbers.
Music – DEVELOPING NOTATION SKILLS.
In music, children will be developing their understanding of musical notation. They will learn to read, write, and perform simple rhythms and notes while exploring pitch, tempo, and dynamics. Children will perform individually and in groups, building confidence, listening skills, and teamwork.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION. GYMNASTICS. FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS.
In PE, Year 3 children will be developing their fundamental movement skills through activities that focus on balance, agility, and coordination. They will practise running, jumping, throwing, and catching in different ways to move confidently and safely. In gymnastics, children will learn to link movements together to create short routines that include jumps, rolls, and balances. Lessons also emphasise teamwork, resilience, and encouraging each other, helping children enjoy being active while improving both their physical skills and confidence.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION- WOULD CELEBRATING DIWALI AT HOME AND IN THE COMMUNITY MAKE A HINDU CHILD FEEL AT HOME?
In RE, children will explore the question: Would celebrating Diwali at home and in the community make a Hindu child feel at home? They will learn about Diwali traditions, symbols, and stories, and reflect on what belonging means within families and communities. Lessons encourage empathy, respect, and understanding of different cultures.
Science- THE HUMAN BODY.
In Science, children will learn about the human body, including how the skeleton and muscles support movement and how organs such as the heart and lungs work together. They will explore how exercise, healthy eating, and rest keep us well, and take part in practical activities to understand how our bodies function.
