Welcome to the Phoenix page for Autumn Two.
Welcome to Autumn Two! We had a lot of fun last half-term with all of our learning and are looking to build upon the great progress we have made this half-term.
In our English lessons, we will be studying the late Benjamin Zephaniah's novel, 'Windrush Child.' This is the story of Leonard, who, at 10 years old, makes the journey with his mother from Jamaica to join his father in England. Leonard is part of the Windrush generation, one of thousands of people and families who were persuaded by the government to help rebuild England after the Second World War and make a better life for themselves. Our work will focus on poetry and diary forms whilst also exploring grammatical terms such as relative clauses and modal verbs. Please see our knowledge organisers for more information. It will also explore the role of racism in Leonard's life, which Zephaniah also experienced growing up in the Midlands in the 1960s. This will be linked heavily with our British values of respect and tolerance.

Maths lessons will start with a recap of the four operations and the multitude of mental strategies which can be utilised in order to calculate. It is essential that children continue to practise their number bonds and multiplication facts at home so that they can become fluent, and the maths becomes automatic, freeing up their minds to concentrate on more complex problems. A great application of this can be when we used factors to solve some mulitplication and division problems.
Our 3D crafting abilities will be tested in computing when we use a three-dimensional design software (TinkerCAD) to complete projects which meet some of the briefs given. This is a great introduction to software and technology which can be used in highend projects. We will explore future aplication of these skills by learning about 3D printing.
Throughout our afternoon sessions we will continue to develop our knowledge and our skills. We will be exploring the impact of air pollution in Great Britain and learning about the challenges that many cities face. After this we will explore the impact of flooding on urban communities.
In history, we continue our work from last half tem exploring the period at the turn of the twentieth century. Our focus for this half term will be women's suffrage and looking at how two different groups (the suffragettes and suffragists) campaigned for women's rights to vote. Concluding this work we will reflect on which side we feel made the most progress.
In our RE lessons, we are looking at the concept of equality and looking at this topic through a multi-faith lens. We will look at how different religions and secular beliefs view equality and form our own opinions based on the content covered.
J'adore le foot? Well, in French we are developing our language through the theme of football champions, using our knowledge of cognates to work out what the sentences mean. We will also be learning football in our PE lessons. Our other PE lesson will be dance, where we will be developing our knowledge and skills.
