Reading is the key to learning at Glade.

These quotes inspire us:

“Reading is to the brain, what exercise is to the body.” – Joseph Addison

“If you want to be intelligent, read fairy tales, if you want to be more intelligent…read more fairy tales!”  - Albert Einstein (adapted)

"Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten.“ – G.K. Chesterton

Reading for just 6 minutes a day can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. More than listening to music or walking, and more than a cup of tea! – University of Sussex

Reading is, therefore, a key focus of the Academy, and we encourage children and their families to keep us up to date with the reading they are doing at home by completing the pages in their knowledge organiser and handing them in each week.

In KS1, the reading books are closely linked to their knowledge of phonics, and in KS2, we use a banding system to ensure that the children select appropriate books which will challenge them based on their reading age assessments, which are completed half-termly.

Children are expected to read at least three times a week at home, and we reward reading at home by awarding each child their own book each time they have read 50 times at home.

Librarians

At Glade, our school librarians have the following vision:

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” Margaret Fuller

We believe that every child can love reading and, as young librarians, we dream of a library that’s fun, friendly and full of adventures – where books open doors to new worlds and everyone feels welcome.

We work together to help our friends find stories they love, keep our library tidy and joyful, and inspire others to read, learn, and imagine. Our vision is to grow as helpers, explorers and champions of reading – one book at a time!

Librarians are responsible for:

Banding the books according to reading age
Stocking and refreshing the book shed and helping children who want to use it
Help classes with their book corners, refreshing them and suggesting books for them.
