Welcome to the summer term in Swans!
English
This half-term in English we will be exploring the book 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, where children will write their own ‘found’ tags for other animals which turn up in the classroom, re-tell the story in their own words and write a sequence of instructions using consistent tense, detailed diagrams and numbers or words indicating chronological order. To finish, children will write their own version of a ‘lost and found’ story.
Maths
In maths, we will build upon our knowledge of length/height and mass/volume before moving on to discover multiplication and division for the first time, using concrete resources and arrays. We will also investigate fractions such as halves and quarters. We will then move onto geometry, thinking about position and direction including quarter, half and three quarter turns.
Science
This half-term focusses on 'Plants and plant growth', an idea we have been building on by developing our vegetable/fruit bed and herb garden and planting potatoes in our KS1 garden. We will be learning about deciduous and evergreen trees and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants.
Geography
We will be exploring the 7 continents of the world alongside the 5 oceans in Geography, including revisiting learning about maps and globes, from Autumn one in Swans.
Art
In art, we will be learning all about sculpture and introduces children to 3D art. They start by exploring how sculptors can use different materials to make sculptures. From this starting point, the children compare Degas’ drawings and sculptures of ballerinas. Over the course of three lessons, the children then learn about the process of making a sculpture, using the work of Gormley and Hepworth to explore making models for larger sculptures, casting and applying colour to sculptures. To investigate this process themselves, they create sculptures in clay and plaster. The unit finishes by returning to the concept of style, by comparing the work of Giacometti and Moore. The children will create their own elongated Giacometti-like figures using pipe-cleaners and foil.
Life Skills
The focus this half-term is relationships when we ask 'What makes a good friend?' We will be thinking about what we need to be a good friend to someone else, as well as recognising those valuable friendships within our peer group. We will also be talking about how we can work together as a team, and settle conflicts successfully. During this half-term we will also have our RSE lesson.
Computing
In computing, we will be learning more about e-safety, data and information. We can do this via technology but also using graphs and pictograms. Children will be classifying and sorting objects to ensure they know how groupings are made.
PE will cover athletics, where will be fine tuning our skills in preparation for the upcoming sports day. We will also be learning about sending and receiving, building on our throwing and catching, ball skills and target games units.
RE
We will focus on Judaism and ask 'Is Shabbat important to Jewish children?' We will learn about Shabbat, and how it is an important part of being Jewish. We will learn what happens in this weekly ritual, and how it impacts family life.
Music lessons will focus on having fun with improvisation, and we think about the question; 'What songs can we sing to help us through the day?' We will be using glockenspiels to practice the notes C, D, E, F, F♯, G, and A.
