Finches - Summer Two

Oh my goodness!  Just seven weeks to go before move-up week and there’s so much that we are cramming into this time: primarily the practice and performance of our Year 5/6 show “Oliver with a Twist”, Careers and Aspirations week, our trip to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, Sports Day and lots more besides!

This is our learning for Summer two term:

Computing:  In computing this half-term, we will be looking at  “if”, “then” and “else” statements and creating algorithms incorporating them.

Design Technology: We will be learning about where honey comes from and the importance of Bees before using some honey to make delicious honey bread.

English:  In English we will be using two books this half-term to help us with our writing.  The first being “Curiosity :  The Story of a Mars Rover” by Markus Motum  and the second, “High Rise Mystery” by Sharna Jackson.

French:  By the end of this unit of learning French, the class will be able to talk confidently about their family members.

Geography:  In Geography we will be learning all about coastal erosion and looking closely at what causes it and how it changes coastlines.

History:  In History we will be studying the Victorian Era, with a main focus on children and this will tie in with our trip to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse.  The children will learn how hard life was and just how easy they have it now!

Life Skills:  Life Skills is all about money matters this half-term.  We will look at Fair Trade and why it is important, as well as why we need money.

Maths:  In Maths we will be focusing on “Number” and decimals for the last time this year, as well as negative numbers, and then we will move over to “Measurement” to practice converting units and closing off the academic year’s learning with capacity.

Music:  In music we will be asking: “How does music shape our way of life?” and looking at three very different pieces of music; the first being a pop song, the second a 20th century orchestral piece and the third is looking at funk and a song called “Keeping Time”.

P.E.:  You can definitely tell that it’s summer as we head outside to play cricket and tennis.  Anyone for Wimbledon?!

R.E.:  In Religious Education we shall be exploring the different ways that Christians show their commitment to their God.  For example, by committing to visiting church, daily prayers, reading the bible etc.

Science:  In science we will be building on what we have learnt this year to look at the weather.  We will focus on what causes the United Kingdom to experience the weather it has, the different layers of the atmosphere, why and how thunder and lightning happens and, most interestingly, how meteorologists predict the weather.
