Knowledge Organisers for Autumn One

Welcome to the Autumn term in Swans!

This half-term in English we will be exploring the book 'Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson and Emily Gravett, where children learn to explore the features of single-clause sentences and create their own caption-sentences. We will retell the story in sequences of sentences and write sorry letters in role.

We will also read ‘Leo and the Octopus’ by Isabelle Marinov and Chris Nixon. Children will celebrate the uniqueness of individuals, discuss the importance of inclusion and indirectly explore some of the considerations around autism. They will explore a range of emotion adjectives and the non-verbal cues that can accompany them. They will then go on a journey with Leo to investigate and learn all they can about octopuses. They will learn a range of skills building towards writing a fact file exhibiting all they have learned. Children will have opportunities to explore writing in simple past and present tense, using plurals and different sentence types.

In maths, we will build upon our knowledge of place value to 10, investigating one more and one less. We will then move on to addition and subtraction within 10 using number lines and part whole models. We will also learn number bonds and fact families to 10, ensuring we build in quick recall of ways 10 can be made.

Science focusses on the human body and 'The five senses'. We will be learning each sense and what body part is connected to the sense. We will learn about investigations and experiments and look at sensory impairments. We will learn about Helen Keller and find out how deafness and blindness affect people when we learn about her life.

In our Geography unit of work ‘spatial sense’, the children will learn about maps and atlases, including reading a key in order to understand the map symbols. We will look at aerial views and the compass points and what they mean.

In Art, we will be learning about ‘colour’, including the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours. We will learn about colour mixing primary colours in order to make secondary colours. We will also look at how to tint using white and shade using black. We will use the skills learnt to paint water and use the influences of the artists David Hockney and Claude Monet to do this.

Life Skills' focus is on health and wellbeing when we ask 'What are feelings?' In computing, we will be learning about e-safety, computing systems and networks primarily through technology in our classroom. PE will cover fundamental PE skills and team building whilst in RE we ask the key question ‘Does God want Christians to look after the world?’. In music, we will be finding rhythm and learning new songs and beginning to learn musical notes on tuned instruments like the boomwhackers and xylophone.
