Autumn One
English
This term, we will be developing our writing skills through two exciting modules. First, we will learn how to write formal letters of application, including how to open and close a letter correctly, use formal language, write in first person, and apply persuasive techniques to convince an adult.
Our second module is the BBC 500 Word Competition, where children will craft imaginative narrative stories. This is a fantastic opportunity to be creative, and we can’t wait to draft, refine, and submit our entries.
Maths
In Maths, children will continue to build confidence and build upon their prior knowledge and gain fluency across key areas of calculation, focussing on addition and subtraction this half-term. They will deepen their understanding of place value, practise efficient written methods, and apply their skills to real‑life mathematical challenges.
Art
In Art, we will explore Islamic art and architecture, discovering the key features that make this style unique. Children will also design their own geometric patterns inspired by traditional Islamic artwork.
B4L (Behaviours for Learning)
We begin Year 5 by focusing on building a strong classroom community. Children will think about what helps everyone feel included and valued, and how we can work together to create a positive, supportive learning environment.
Computing
Our Computing lessons will explore how information is shared online, how messages travel across the internet, and what personal information should or should not be shared. This links closely to our e‑safety work on online identity and making safe choices when using digital platforms.
French
This unit will help children confidently say the date in French. By the end of the term, they will be able to:
- Recognise and recall the 7 days of the week
- Recognise and recall the 12 months of the year
- Use numbers 1–31
- Ask and answer questions about the date
- Ask and answer questions about birthdays
Geography
In Geography, we begin Year 5 with a focus on spatial sense. Children will learn about longitude, latitude, the Prime Meridian, the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. They will also develop a clearer understanding of time zones and how they work around the world.
History
We will travel back to 900 CE and explore the fascinating city of Baghdad. Children will learn why Baghdad became a centre of learning, where people of many faiths gathered to share knowledge peacefully. They will also discover how its location made it an important hub for trade routes across the world.
Life Skills
Our Life Skills lessons will explore identity—what it means and what makes each of us unique. Children will also investigate stereotyping and reflect on who their role models are and why.
Music
In Music, we will step back to 1986 and learn to perform Bon Jovi’s classic song Livin’ on a Prayer. Children will listen closely, explore musical features, and enjoy performing together.
PE
This term in PE, children will take part in Gymnastics and Netball, developing coordination, teamwork, and confidence in physical activity. PE days will be Monday and Friday.
RE
In RE, we will explore the importance of symbols—how they are used in everyday life and why they hold special meaning in the five major world faiths: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism.
